London to Birmingham by train - operators, times and ticket guide

In short: London Euston to Birmingham New Street is 1 hour 17 minutes on the fastest Avanti Pendolino. Fares run from about £15 for an Advance booked ahead to £100+ for an Anytime same-day. West Midlands Railway runs a slower stopping service (2 hours) for about half the price.
London to Birmingham by train — operators, journey times, and ticket prices
Two operators run direct services from Euston to Birmingham New Street, and they serve different purposes: speed or savings.

Avanti West Coast runs the flagship intercity service. Their Class 390 Pendolinos cover the distance in about 1 hour 17 minutes on the fastest runs, typically calling at Rugby and Coventry. Pendolinos have seat-back tables, a shop, and a quiet coach.
West Midlands Railway runs stopping services that call at Watford Junction, Milton Keynes Central, Northampton, Rugby, Coventry, and several intermediate stations before Birmingham International and New Street. The journey takes a little over 2 hours, but fares are substantially lower.
There is also a CrossCountry service from Reading through to Birmingham, but that doesn't leave from any London terminal — it is only useful if you're starting in the Thames Valley.

During weekday peaks, both operators run frequently. Expect 2-3 trains per hour heading to Birmingham across both operators.
The first departure leaves around 05:35 and the last direct train at 23:30. West Midlands Railway tends to have the earliest and latest departures. Check the live board for Euston for exact times on your travel date.
Finding your platform at Euston
Platforms at Euston are not announced until about 15-20 minutes before departure.
Birmingham services typically depart from platforms 1-8 on the main concourse — directly ahead as you walk past the ticket barriers. Avanti services sometimes use platforms 9-16, which branch off to the right past the shops.
At Birmingham New Street, London arrivals generally come into the B-end of the station (platforms 1-5). Walk through to the A-end for the main exit and the shopping centre above.

Railcard discounts (1/3 off) apply to both operators on Advance and Off-Peak fares. A Network Railcard works on this route, as does the 26-30, Two Together, and most others.
Watch for: West Midlands Railway Anytime tickets are valid only on their services, not Avanti's. The ticket barriers will let you through but you'll be charged a penalty fare if an inspector catches you on the wrong operator's train. Read the ticket restrictions when you buy.
Euston and New Street: what to expect
Euston is utilitarian — a low-ceilinged concourse with departure screens and not much seating. There is a M&S Simply Food, a WH Smith, and a Costa. The free WiFi works (eventually).
Birmingham New Street was rebuilt in 2015. It is bright and open, with a John Lewis atrium above the concourse. Plenty of food options inside Grand Central (Leon, Five Guys, M&S). Step-free access throughout.
Both stations have accessible toilets and staff assistance on request. New Street has a first-class lounge (Avanti customers only) on the upper level near the B-end platforms.
Where the West Coast Main Line breaks
- Milton Keynes area — the bottleneck north of MK affects everything. Trains stack up waiting for paths through the junction.
- Watford Junction — the approaches to Euston narrow down significantly around here. A broken-down train delays everything behind it.
- Rugby — a major junction where the Trent Valley line splits off. Late-running services here cascade through the timetable north of Rugby.
- Overhead line damage — the West Coast is fully electrified, but sections of overhead wire date from the original 1960s electrification and are vulnerable to weather, debris, and bird strike.

On a £35 Advance single, a 30-minute delay would be worth a 50% refund of about £17.50. The claim process takes about five minutes through the operator's website.
Setting off
- Check the live board for Euston about 30 minutes before departure — it shows platform assignments and any delays.
- The Pendolino seat-back power sockets are between the seats, not under them. Window-seat passengers will need to reach across their neighbour to plug in.
- The on-board WiFi on Avanti services is functional but slow during peak times when everyone is using it.
