In short: Birmingham New Street to Manchester Piccadilly is 1 hour 25 minutes on CrossCountry, which runs most of the 23 daily services. Fares run from about £15 for an Advance booked ahead to £70+ for an Anytime return. Manchester services leave from the A-end platforms at New Street (1–5); most arrive at Piccadilly platforms 1–4.
Birmingham to Manchester by train — the cross-country route explained
The direct Birmingham-to-Manchester trains take the cross-country route through Staffordshire — a line that runs parallel to the M6 for much of its length. It is not as fast as the London-to-Manchester express, but it is direct, frequent, and avoids changing at Crewe.
CrossCountry and the alternatives
Two operators run direct services from Birmingham to Manchester:

CrossCountry runs almost all direct services. Their Voyager trains (Class 220/221) run every 30-60 minutes between about 06:00 and 22:30. These are diesel trains — the route is not fully electrified.
CrossCountry trains call at Wolverhampton, Stafford, Stoke-on-Trent, and Macclesfield before Manchester. Some services skip one or two of these; journey time varies by about 10 minutes.
Transport for Wales runs a much less frequent service from Birmingham International via Shrewsbury, Wrexham, and Chester. Journey time is 2 hours or more. Unless you start at Birmingham International, CrossCountry is the practical choice.
Avanti West Coast does not run a direct Birmingham-to-Manchester service — their trains pass through Birmingham as part of the London-to-Manchester route but do not serve Birmingham as an origin-destination pair. To use Avanti, change at Crewe, which adds about 30 minutes.

The time difference between CrossCountry services is small. Take the next CrossCountry departure; you will arrive within minutes of taking the one after it.
Platforms and on-board reality
At Birmingham New Street, Manchester services typically depart from the A-end platforms (1-5). Walk through the concourse past the shops to reach them.
CrossCountry Voyagers are 4 or 5-car trains. Seating is 2+2 with airline-style tables and power sockets at most seats. There is a shop on board (usually between coaches C and D). First class is a separate section at one end of the train with wider seats and complimentary refreshments on most services.
Voyagers have small overhead luggage racks that fit only a day bag. Full-size suitcases go in the luggage stacks at the end of each coach, which fill quickly — board early if you can.

CrossCountry Advance fares are reasonable booked ahead. Their Anytime fares are steep — £50-70+ for 85 miles. If you know your travel date, book a CrossCountry Advance.
Transport for Wales fares are comparable or slightly cheaper, with fewer Advance allocations due to lower frequency.
Railcards apply: Network, Two Together, 26-30, Senior, and Family & Friends give 1/3 off Advance, Off-Peak, and Anytime fares. A Network Railcard takes a CrossCountry Advance single from about £20 to about £13.
New Street and Piccadilly
Birmingham New Street is covered in our London to Birmingham guide. Manchester services leave from the A-end (platforms 1-5), which means walking the length of the station. Allow 5 minutes from the main entrance.
Manchester Piccadilly is Manchester's main station. The concourse is modern with a mezzanine of food outlets. CrossCountry services typically use platforms 1-4 (through platforms near the main entrance). Platform 13-14 (the far end) is a long walk to the exit.
Cross-country delay patterns
- New Street congestion — Birmingham New Street is a complicated station with dozens of converging routes. A delayed departure from New Street is the most common cause of lateness on this route.
- Stafford — where the cross-country line crosses the West Coast main line. Signalling conflicts between the two routes are common.
- Stoke-on-Trent — the single-line section south of Stoke (between Stone and Stoke Junction) is a bottleneck. A late southbound train delays northbound services waiting for the section to clear.
- Macclesfield to Cheadle Hulme — parts of this section are single track. An oncoming service running late means your train waits at a signal until the line clears.
Delay Repay thresholds:
- CrossCountry: DR30 — claim after 30 minutes. 30-59 min = 50% of single fare, 60+ min = 100%.
- Transport for Wales: DR15 — claim from 15 minutes, 12.5% at the minimum tier.
On a £20 CrossCountry Advance single, a 45-minute delay is worth £10 back. CrossCountry uses DR30 — a higher threshold than most operators. Before you travel
- Check the live board for Birmingham New Street — Manchester services are marked "Manchester Piccadilly".
- Platform assignments at New Street appear about 10-15 minutes before departure. Don't head through the barriers until the platform is confirmed.
- Sit on the left side for the best view — the Peak District is visible on clear days as you approach Manchester from Macclesfield.
- Book a CrossCountry Advance if you know your travel date. Anytime fares on this route are steep.
