London to Manchester by train — frequency, operators, and which ticket to buy
Avanti West Coast runs almost every direct service on this route, and the journey takes just over two hours. This guide covers journey times, fares, platforms at both ends, and the two chokepoints (Milton Keynes and Crewe) where a single failure cascades north.
Who runs London to Manchester
Avanti West Coast runs the vast majority of direct services on the West Coast Main Line. Their Class 390 Pendolinos are tilting silver trains that lean into curves for higher speed. Avanti also runs Class 805 Evero trains, bi-mode units that switch to diesel on non-electrified sections. Everos are quieter than Pendolinos.

Every direct Avanti service from Euston to Manchester makes intermediate calls — what varies is how many. The fastest take 2 hours 6 minutes with 4–5 stops (Stafford, Crewe, Wilmslow, Stockport). The slowest take 2 hours 36 minutes, serving more stations. The CrossCountry route via Birmingham runs 3 hours 30 minutes or more.

Platforms at Euston and Piccadilly
Euston assigns platforms about 20 minutes before departure. The main concourse serves platforms 1–8 (short walk, clear sightlines). Platforms 9–18 branch past the shops. Most Manchester Pendolinos use the main concourse. Check the live board for Euston 20 minutes before departure.
At Manchester Piccadilly, most London arrivals use platforms 1–5 on the through lines. Platform 13 exists but is the far end — expect it only when something has gone wrong with scheduling.

Set a calendar reminder 10 weeks before you travel. The cheapest Advance fares sell out first — especially Friday and Sunday evening services.
Standard Premium is Avanti's upgrade: about £6–15 extra for a quieter coach, wider seat, and a table that doesn't wobble. Worth it if you plan to work on board.
At the stations
Euston: toilets by the taxi rank (before the main concourse), M&S Simply Food, WHSmith. Free WiFi works most of the time. The first-class lounge is upstairs if Avanti gives you access.
Manchester Piccadilly: better coffee (an independent near platform 1), brighter concourse than Euston, and easier-to-read departure screens.
Both stations have step-free access.
Where delays come from
- Milton Keynes area — multiple routes converge north of MK. A delay here cascades through the West Coast Main Line.
- Crewe — another convergence point. Failure here delays everything north.
- Autumn leaves — Pendolinos struggle on the West Coast's leafy sections in October–November.
- Avanti strikes — better lately, but worth checking before you travel.

- Check the live board for Euston 40 minutes before you leave.
